Due to popular demand, GSC Game World has released an old version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl - 'xrCore' build 1935, Oct 18 2004.

Originally announced in November 2001 for a 2003 release, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (or S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost as it was known then) was renowned for its long development cycle and frequent delays.

Whilst in development, numerous video clips and hundreds of screenshots were circulated showcasing the game's X-ray graphics engine which featured HDR rendering, parallax and normal mapping, soft shadows, motion blur, widescreen support, weather effects and day/night cycles.

The game was also hailed for its proprietary ALife artificial intelligence engine, where NPCs would accomplish tasks, combat, rest, feed and sleep. The non-scripted and innovative nature of the characters meant that there were an unlimited number of random quests.

However, when S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl was finally released in March 2007, much of what was promised had been cut or changed, such as using vehicles, monsters and many of the role-playing elements.

Now GSC Game World has released a build from 2004 which utilised a completely different physics engine than the one used in the final retail version. This build is fully playable and contains all of the original levels as well as those that were cut such as Dead City, Swamp and Generators.

This version is not so much a demo or mod, but more of an insight into the game's development. Curious fans of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will find this both fascinating and intriguing although may wonder why some elements were removed from the retail release.

GSC Game World have issued a disclaimer where they cannot guarantee stability, so bugs and crashes will occur. They have also said that they will not provide technical assistance.

Installation instructions
  1. Download the files from one of the links below and extract them to a new folder
  2. Delete the 'savedgames' folder
  3. Run the game with run_alife_s.bat
  4. Download and extract these files to the build folder for better visual effects
Further information, which we recommend reading thoroughly, can be found on the GSC Game World forums.

I bought CS in the first week and that was far from stable. You actually needed a patch to be able to complete SP.
Perhaps you bought the game after some patches were released (which made good sense ).

not rly ) I got the game at the very begining ( clear sky ) even made a vid back thenm about how buggy the game was , lol look:

Eh, I was waiting for this game for so long and got little dissapointed.
I expected something like survival kind of game in post-apocalyptic world.
Something like You need to find a safe place to make a camp at night (building or something), and find something to eat at day.
It would be awesome.

Seeing how stable the final releases are I wonder if you can actually play for more than 30 seconds.

There are mods which add this kind of functions too. Apparently they are still in the game, just not used.w00t ive never experienced any crashes in stalker..but i might just be lucky

There are torrents circulating the internet (details in the forums link), but I found the second download link to Gameinator to be quite fast.

I like how in the distance you hear the screams of random zombies wandering aimlessly into anomalies.

I remember reading PC Gamer back a long time ago and seeing screenshots thinking that graphics of that detail just wasn't possible, then the game vanished - for way too long - and it came out with a big 'meh'

Anyone know if it's possible to download all those files in a .rar or .zip? I'm not one to wait around all day waiting for files to DL.
