What happened to expansions ?
By: ErrLloyd, July 3rd 09 - 824 views, 5 commentsAs nearly all of you know Modern Warfare 2 is just around the corner. Sickeningly its the second Cod installment since Cod4, and the 3 standalone game in that series released in 2 years, but there aren't any glaring issues with 4. Its not like the engine doesn't work or the graphics are unsatisfactory, so why replace it?
I have heard it said MW2 will have the same requirements (roughly) as cod4, I haven't seen any evidence of any major changes, so I ask what is the point of brining out a new game when they could just release a shit load of new maps, new guns and a new sp for cod4. It would probably be less than half the effort and do much the same thing.
Are we just not excited by expansions anymore. I remember a time when we were, who had medal of honour AA but no spearhead? (Anyone who wanted to clip... Mainly the Dutch). Who had "Age of Kings" but not "Age of Conquerers". I had Bf1942, Road to Rome and Secret Weapons. Both C&C 3s.
Are we so shallow that we pick up games just to see "whats new" and not to ad to our gameplay.
And no-one even dare say that "downloadable content" has replaced expansions. Thats fucking bullshit and you know it, Cod4 gave us 4 maps, 1 of which they didn't even make, 1 they ripped from single player, 1 was hardly a map and the other was creek.... which was shit.
I for one would probably pay 40 euro for a host of new maps, a new SP and a load of new guns. I think most of us would, so why the hell are IW bothering, its just further splitting this community.

I can understand you would buy an expansion but if I look at my personal buying behavior, I can say that I haven't bought any expansion. I think expansions are even more milking cows than releasing another sequel. Games which are supported by user generated content are favorable to me to games which have no such features. I think COD would be a lot more fun if the amount of maps would be bigger.
I don't think I'm going to automatically buy this COD4 sequel just because it is COD. I will try the demo and then maybe buy the game. If it feels the same as COD4 I'm not going to buy it.
If people wouldn't reward game developers for making this easy money it wouldn't happen. I for one am not going to support crappy games. I do support expansions at low prices though as they long the gameplay for a REASONABLE price. |

imo the only game that benefits from the expansion packs is Sims ! |

why wouldn't they put out a new cod each year? they have to milk the money cow while it's still giving milk. publishers don't give the slightest damn that i would like a game to settle and form communities or produce user generated content.
they could make MW2 an expansion if they wanted, but expansions usually are at a lower price in retail stores, so putting out a full-priced game is much more beneficial. considering they are already sitting on CoD4/WaW code, which are pretty damn good by themselves, they can make a full featured game with the same effort an expansion would require.
and not many developers can afford to turn down a publisher's contract to make whatever game just because they feel it would be immoral or w/e. they have to eat too |
